Tavern, Bangalore

Residency Road.

They have a steep entry for stags on Fridays and Saturdays. A quarter grand which is not even a Cover charge.ÿBOB is .85ÿ and they only serve Kingfisher and Kalyani. Tap is rs30. Pitcher is rs120.

The decor consists of comfortable sofas set around the edges and circular tables with bar stools around them set all over the remaining space. The lighting is dimmed so you can't really distinguish between the colors of the upholstery.

The DJ has a closed cabin to himself which can be isolated (locked off) from the rest of the pub. I guess it makes him feel more secure that way. Out of the reach of pub hoppers who don't like his music perhaps. He doesn't do that bad a job though. But then its not his fault that the super woofers all around churn your drink like a milk shake. He plays all kind of stuff from 'sweet child of mine' to 'hotel california', in that order.

The first cocktail we ordered was 'silk panties' -ÿ that's a combo of strawberry crush, peach schnapps and vodka. I almost thought I was regressing into my high school days when it arrived in a test tube (with the borosil label still on it) placed in a test tube stand which had Smirnoff written all over it. That little piece of lingerie couldn't have been more thanÿ 30 ml of liquid but it increased our bill by 200 bucks straight.

They have a huge assortment of cocktails. They have actually classified them separately as vodka based, rum based, whisky based and so on. My friend ordered Sex on the Beach next. But this too had peach schnapps in it. Fortunately it arrived in a decent glass. Decent shape and decent size. I've never been partial to peach schnapps myself. But seeing that this cocktail at least had some amount of liquid sustenance in it, I ordered the Chi-Chi which is the same as a Pina Colada with a vodka base instead of a rum base. It was quite good.

Most of the cocktails were in the 120 - 160 range, except a few exotic ones like the silky stuff which was 200. The hard stuff was 65 for premium brands and 60 for the next grade. CD's seperate.

Their tandoori stuff is good but gets totally chilled by the time they bring it up from their basement kitchen to the first floor pub. Veg snacks are 40-60 bucks. Non-veg stuff is 90-120. The dragon rolls were decent though.

The crowd is varied. Lot of pseuds around flaunting the smallest handsets and the biggest cars. Heard a woman was marketing herself for 3 grand (don't know if you'd want to put that in, though) so I guess its quite an upmarket place. What was I doing in such a place ?.

Ended the evening with some Malibu rum neat which went down really smoothly. A lovely beginning to a blissful Saturday night, with no hurry to get up the next morning.

Pink Panther, Bangalore

G-7 Ramanashree

Chambers

37, Lady

Curzon Road.

Phone 5592404.

This is the most unprepossessing place that I have sat down at for a mug in Bangalore. I was surprised that this small joint with just 3 tables could andÿ actually would go in for such heavy advertising. Unfortunately it was only at the end of my brief sojourn there that I realised that they had a much bigger place upstairs that had airconditioning. This, while I was sweating it out, in the sweltering Bangalore heat, out in the open.ÿ

They serve only draught beer. A mug is rs25, a pint is 50 and a pitcher is 125. This might sound ok, but they have a 11% sales tax, so be warned. The beer was chilled ok, but it was quite flat. If it wasn't for my being so thirsty, I think I wouldn't even have given it to my dog (who incidentally is named brandy). They said it was Kingfisher, but it was worse than horse piss. Truly. you can check up and get back to me if you don't take my word for it.

The food here is good though they do specialise in coming up with unusual combinations - sort of fusion food. There was no music, no TV, no entertainment at all.ÿ But then maybe my timing was all wrong for going there in the noon. Nothing much to recommend or comment about this place. Wonder what the pink panther would actually think about this place, which has absolutely no resemblance to his lovable quirky character.ÿ But if you are in this business district and can't go far in your lunch break and want a beer, thenÿ walk in, ask for a beer, hold your nose, and just gulp it down.

Pecos, Bangalore

Rest House Road.

Ph: 5586047

Timings:11:30 A.M to 11 P.M

Pitcher : ~ rs120/.

Editor's Note:"Upstairs to the loo, downstairs for cigarettes, no wonder our regulars are so fit". When a place spends money on Sista's to produce copy like this you can tell that they're doing well and that there's a method to their popularity. Peco's is the only place so far for which we have received 3 reviews from our readers. Given our paucity of Bangalore reviews, we were tempted to put all three up. On with the review:

Peco's is near Resthouse road, just off Brigade road. It's open from 11:00AM-2:30PM and 5:30PM-11:30PM.

Promotion posters from Pecos jolt you with their message. "Listen to the guys from whom Michael should Learn to Rock". Well the guy who had last occupied my flat had this poster up on his bedroom wall, and I of course couldn't wait to get to this place, having just arrived in the Pub city of Bangalore.

So we went. And I was entranced. For anyone who is a beer guzzler, Pecos is heaven. They only serve Kingfisher draught beer. So I can't give you a BOB. A Mug is rs22/- and a Pitcher is around 120/- and no there aren't any zeroes missing. I have found that this is the most reasonable pub to be drinking beer in in Bangalore. A free plate of snacks is served with each Pitcher. Food is decent. A plate of chicken is in the range of 50-55 bucks.

Music played is Woodstock time and type. Volume is just about right. Portraits of Woodstock musicians line the walls that aren't already covered by murals. Half the wall resembles red bricks which gives you a feel of being in a daru ka thekha. They have tables and bar stools. 2 floors plus a terrace. The downside of the terrace is that no amps have been fitted in there, but it feels good to be sitting in the open air. Pecos has a circular staircase and most evenings the pub is so full that you find junta sitting on these stairs. So ladies beware of wearing skirts if you intend to come in late or leave early.

It is shut, as most pubs in Bangalore are, between 2:30PM and 5:30PM.

Well after all this there has to be a downside, since nothing's perfect, right ?

Pecos serves only beer. No cocktails, no hard liquor, only beer.

So if your batch reunion includes a beer guzzling competition then Pecos is the place to meet at.
